Event Description
A concert of String Quintets Matthew Edmonds ā piano Richard Carr ā piano Stagg String Quartet Guy Haskell and David Benett, violins Susan Black, viola Neil Charlton, cello Piano Quintet in Eā major ā Schumann Piano Quintet in F minor, op. 34 - Brahms Born 200 years ago in 1810 in Zwickau, Saxony, Schumann is known mainly for his piano music and songs, but his contribution to chamber music is also significant. The Piano Quintet of 1842 succeeds brilliantly. Schumann's pianist wife, Clara, described it as "magnificent - filled with energy and freshness". Brahms' Quintet, completed in 1864, started as a quartet and later became a sonata for 2 pianos. Before taking its final form, Brahms destroyed the quartet but published the sonata. It is most satisfying as a quintet, piano and strings being equally important.
